FAQ
Can I use the Instant Box Camera with other large format lenses?
Yes, you can use large format lenses with the Instant Box Camera. We can provide an adapter – just let us know before you place your order. If you intend to use our negative folder to produce a positive image, your lens should have a focal length between 110 mm and 150 mm for best results.
Can I use a 35 mm lens on the Instant Box Camera?
No, a 35 mm lens cannot be used. It doesn’t produce a large enough image projection for this type of camera. A 35 mm lens is designed for a much smaller format, with an image size of just 36 x 24 mm.
What kind of filters should I use with the Instant Box Camera?
If you’re using multigrade photographic paper (which offers variable contrast), you need to use contrast filters.
- For Ilford paper, use a soft filter 0 or 00.
- For FOMA paper, use Y or even two Y filters to achieve a soft negative and, in turn, a soft positive image.
You can also use fixed-grade paper, but softer grades are increasingly rare.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes, we ship internationally. During checkout, you can view the shipping cost to your country. We ship from Europe via UPS to ensure reliable tracking. Shipping to North America, South America, or Asia is typically over 100 EUR.
What is the difference between the kit version and the fully assembled version?
Both versions contain exactly the same materials, lens, and tripod. The only difference is that the assembled version comes fully put together, varnished, and optionally coloured (custom colour adds 50 EUR). Functionally, both versions are identical.
What ISO is photographic paper?
Photographic papers have very low ISOs, usually between 2 and 5. We recommend using ISO 3 as a good average. FOMA paper paired with a FOMA Y filter performs well at ISO 3.
Can I use film with the Instant Box Camera?
Yes, you can use sheet film. The standard size for our paper holder is 10 x 15 cm (roughly 4 x 5 inches). We offer adapters for smaller paper or films. When using film, switch from a paper developer to a film developer.
How does your workshop setup work?
We offer tailored workshops at your location. This involves a travel and accommodation fee, plus the cost for the instructor and the cameras you order.
The workshop typically runs over two days:
- Day 1: We build the camera(s) together
- Day 2: We practise using the camera, including photographic techniques and creative tips
What should I do if a piece is missing in my package?
If something is missing, just let us know which part it is. This is a social project, and occasionally small pieces may be forgotten. We will send the missing item to you immediately.
Do you offer discounts for students, schools, or institutions?
Unfortunately, no. As a social project, we already offer the camera at a low price point and do not seek to make a large profit. We aim to keep it accessible for all.
